Inuyasha SequelThere’s a new anime spin-off of Inu-Yasha coming soon and I’m torn over it.

I already posted this on my DeviantArt page so if you want to see it, here’s the link:

For those who DON’T want to click the link, here’s a rehash. MAJOR SPOILERS for those who HAVEN’T watched the show.

I’ve just learned that one of my favorite animes that ended bitter-sweetly is coming back with a new installment featuring their kids. Now first off, my mind is thinking, “okay, they’re trying to pull a Naruto Next Generation here but with Inu-Yasha.” but at the same time I can’t help but to wonder if this might be good.

The one thing I have a problem with is some of the stories that were wrapped up with plot-holes still unanswered.

First off, Kagome abandons her time period, the future, to live in the past. What’s to say her reckless choice won’t screw up history, let alone her own ancestry?

Then there’s the romances from the original show. Some of you might be aware, but for those who aren’t, I never got behind the Miroku/Sango pairing. Sango’s origin episode was my introduction to the show and she was IMMEDIATELY my favorite character. Now I only tolerated Miroku’s antics because it was comical but when the idea of him and Sango being an actual couple came up I was like “HELL NO!”.

For one thing, it’s too obvious, like the Gambit/Rogue pairing from X-Men; their characters should not be defined by their relationship. Gambit & Rogue are paired simply because they both originate from “the south”, making it seem a bit forced.

Back to Miroku & Sango, it really IS forced, mostly by Kagome. She thinks they’re great together but they are TOO different. She’s a noble warrior seeking revenge after losing her family but she needs to find peace and love. He’s a perverted con-artist dressed as a monk with a tragic past who thinks it’s okay to indulge in selfish whims. Now I understand Kagome wanting them to be more of a team and getting along but she really pushed it too far.

And then there’s Miroku propositioning a 13-year-old. Now I understand Feudal Japan was a different time and culture but come on, that’s crossing the line. How can ANY sane woman, let alone Sango, find love with someone like that? Seriously?

In fact, when I played Inu-Yasha: Secret of the Cursed Mask on PlayStation 2, I didn’t hesitate in pairing my Male character, Michiru Kururugi, with Sango and I gotta say; for a character only in one game interacting with established heroes, Michiru & Sango are a FAR better couple than Miroku & Sango. I don’t care what the Miroku/Sango supporters say, I will stand by that to the death.

But sadly, the anime ended with Miroku & Sango together with children; and for the life of me I don’t know why. I understand Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Inu-Yasha, didn’t have a planned ending when she wrote the manga and still didn’t by the time the anime started but seriously, much as I respect her for creating this heart-felt series, what was she thinking pairing the noble beloved Demon Slayer with a perverted con-artist who propositioned a 13-year-old? I’m not saying Miroku is irredeemable but I just never believed he was right for Sango.

Regardless, the new Spin-off of Inu-Yasha will follow the children of, ugh, Miroku & Sango along with Inu-Yasha & Kagome’s daughter whom I’m not entirely sure if she is meant to be likeable or not. I mean, Kagome is a VERY flawed character and not entirely in the good way, I won’t go too deep into that at this time.

Fellow fans of the series helped educate me a bit and I even saw a few YouTube reviews that point out these issues. Now maybe we’re Americans who can’t entirely understand the mind-set of what makes these characters the way they are or behave the way they do but I feel like some logic was taken out of the story-telling as the series went on.

To me, the TRUE end of Inu-Yasha was with Secret of the Cursed Mask. You had a new character introduced, who’s more likeable than Kagome surprisingly, going through a Hero’s Journey growth and earn a potential love-interest whom he must say goodbye to at the end after the series’ main villain is destroyed.

So with that said, I’ll wait for the verdict on this show since I’m not fully invested due to it going with the “Miroku/Sango is canon” story. Seriously, why didn’t the video game characters, whom I believe Rumiko Takahashi herself created, get put into the show? Why don’t we get an alternative timeline series where they are part of it?

Whatever, I won’t watch it right away. If it IS good, despite some aspects I’m not fond of, I’ll check it out, depending on what fellow fans have to say about it.
