I’d say she’s a good and capable author. The first three books were really well written.
after that we get a decline… I felt the books started to look more like puzzles and things were done like snaps killing dumbness for spectacle.
I understand she plotted it out but it’s definitely looser than early books. The last book or two felt like Star Wars in that the wands were blasters and not magical.
she’s no Tolkien but the books are entertaining.
I put her ahead of that fat fuck grrm for at least finishing the series.
Personally, I still enjoy the Harry Potter books even as an adult. Obviously, they’re no Shakespeare, but I enjoyed the hidden magical world Rowling created as well as the characters which I can still relate to even today. I can still laugh at how innocent the characters were in the beginning, comparing how I was when I was younger. That sense of discovery and intrigue to the world around you is something I think we all need to remember. I can even relate to the characters as they grow up. Sure, the drama can be obnoxious, and Hermione’s obsession with house elves is even more so, but it still reminds me of some of my friends from school and how everything in their lives was so much more dramatic than it needed to be. Even though some of the plot lines in the later books look a bit like swiss cheese, I almost don’t care because of how much fun it is to spend time in Hogwarts and see people like Nevile or Draco evolve from how they used to be back in book one. It also helps to listen to the fantastic audiobooks especially at night when you want something familiar and easy to fall asleep to.
I started listening to Harry Potter when I was extremely young. My parents listened to the books first on cassettes and then gave them to me. Someone older getting into Harry Potter might not have the nostalgia to back up their reading experience, but I would still argue the coming-of-age themes and the war between good and evil are a timeless story that someone young and even some adults could still enjoy. Even if you’re really not into Harry Potter, you can at least accept these books are buried treasure compared to the most recent crap they call Young Adult. I’m mainly talking about people like Cassandra Clare or Sarah J. Maas where incest and sex scenes are rife.
Same. First few books and just lost all interest. Will Wilder books were supposedly a religious answer to Harry Potter. I liked Percy Jackson. I also liked The SpellSlinger series by De Castell.
I’ve only been interested in the original Harry Potter series but not the Fantastic Beasts spin offs (both the films and books). ‘The Cursed Child’ wasn’t too bad as a script but I’ve not seen the stage play. Loved the films but I don’t think the score was as memorable after John Williams left even though there were some good pieces on the later ones.
Still got most of the original merch from 20 years ago from when the first film came out lol. I’m also really looking forward to ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ when that finally decides to come out as it’s the sort of HP game I would’ve loved to have played as a kid on the original PlayStation back in the day rather than the in-game tie-ins to the films that we ended up getting. Of which I didn’t like the controls for most of them sadly.
I tried to read Harry Potter a few times. Always fell asleep.
She’s a good writer. Success doesn’t lie. In fact, it is remarkable how few good writers are out there and if you read a lot, you know that the names make a name for themselves for a reason. Jeremy gave a really good review to the Theme Park and the Theme Park for Potter really does look great. As for authors, I am surprised there is no topic for Suzanne Collins of The Hunger Games.
I recently finished Sorcerer’s stone. I wasn’t allow to read Harry Potter growing up. I remember hearing on the TV that some people in New England were trying to get the books banned and there was a lot of controversy surrounding them so I missed the boat even as a 90s kid :( BUT. Recently finally finished the first book. Was difficult because it was too relatable. I don’t think it was overrated at all. If anything, felt underrated. She does use a lot of…borrowed stuff. In fact much of the book felt like everything was borrowed lol. BUT, Tarantino says to steal from everything :P And if you ever watch comparative pieces on Kill Bill or Reservoir Dogs for example…it’s truly incredible how much stuff he steals and gets away with it. Because at some point, you’ve taken so much that it is now you. It’s now your own work of art. And that’s beautiful.
Ursula K. Le Guin is an author I had never heard of. Just picked up a copy of EarthSea the other day for free. It was engaging. Kind of spooky and eerie story about a wizard who is spiteful and summons an entity he cannot control. Supposedly written for young adults. I do not know much about the author, but the writing itself was pretty good. The covers of the series are newer, so I would never have known that the story is older. Underrated writer I’d have to say. Never heard of her in my life and she is now deceased. The sequel to this book, which I have yet to read, is called “The Tombs of Atuan” and it won a Newbery Award. Brand new discovery for me, this writer.
ya no to over rated but then i never read the harry potter books-i just got one and two-plus i have the movies.
