Hello FallenOmegaStar, thank you for your reply. I agree with you on erring on the side of caution. I like feedback but not the dopamine aspects of it where it turns into a popularity contest. If you could change the like and dislike button as a feature on social media then what would be your alternative solution to it.
Hello WatchParty, thank you for your reply. I agree with you that a like/dislike can be a double edged sword that brings feedback but also popularity along with it. I never looked at the human psychology aspects of it before. This is an interesting take. I also have never participated in forums with like/dislike buttons before. I appreciate your insights and opinions.
Hello sundog, thank you for your reply. I agree that a like/dislike button could be a problem on Geeks and Gamers website.
Having likes is ok but I think dislike gives the opportunity for hivemind mentality like in Reddit.
Example, even if you politely share your view on characters in a show and how badly they were written during a season to force the shipping of a couple, people on the thread who just disagree will dislike it to oblivion without even trying to debate.
« Not my ideology / not same opinion as mine ? BAD!! »
This can make some users being always left with destroyed comments and sometimes personal attacks because you don’t agree with a group. Happened to me once recently and I just left the subReddit.
Reality is, in those social media most people are not there to share and discuss but validate their ideas/opinions in an echo chamber.
Good old forums didn’t have this Twitter/Facebook like feature. I don’t think it’s needed here, no need for folks to validate your view on something.
In my eyes at least, but some people always seek attention of others to feel good.
AnimatedGamers – No problem :)
Poll options are usually implemented via scripts. Many forums sites have the option of enabling them, or can easily obtain them. Depending on who the site host service provider is and what forum software the site runs off of. For some forums, it’s literally just a matter of checkmarking a box, in a a site administrator panel. For sites that don’t utilize a more robust pre-created system, it means incorporating the scripts into the server, then another set of scripts to implement THOSE scripts.
I can’t say for sure what they’d have to do here, as I don’t know what forums software they use here. That, and I really wasn’t too much on the technical side of some of the boards that I used to work on.
Hello Legion, thank you for your reply. I appreciate your opinions and insights. I agree with you on both the like and dislike buttons and their consequences.
Maybe for another type of website a like/dislike button could add to the fun or contribute something to the conversation. But for Geeks & Gamers, which is often controversial and targeted by political activists, a like/dislike button would become an extreme problem and source of contention.
Everything has been said I think
My 2 cents is to keep it WITHOUT likes/dislikes
but its not a bad idea reminding people that polls are an option (is there a poll function btw?) to test the waters
Well, guys we have like and booo buttons on the website now. However, I hope that everyone on the forums use them responsibly.
Everyone here as already expressed the same opinions I have on this. A tool depends upon the user.
You can use a hammer to build a house. Or use that same hammer to hit people in the head with.
theanimatedgamers I just wanted to thank you for opening this discussion and getting the pulse of the forum here going. I have spoken enough on the topic that everything I have to say is already said on this thread by other users here.
We have a good community here, but so far it is kind of small in the terms of what it could be. Everyone has made great points and counter points. I think time will tell on how things play out. Most of us have seen this before and the reason we are here is to escape that.
I just wanted to give you a personal thanks as it is refreshing to see people being able to talk about these things without it devolving into the typical standard. To much of that was chipping away at the hope I have in people. I always count on this place and the community to restore and keep my faith in humanity alive.
I agree – it’s been a great discussion and even though we’ve implemented like/dislike buttons, we’re still listening to feedback from everyone here!
Just to chim in, I’ve been to a number of forums that have a ‘like’ button, but do not have a ‘dislike’ button. I feel that’s a better system overall. If I dislike or otherwise have a problem with a post, I think making a reply would be more effective then hitting this forum’s “Booo” button.
Just my two cents, I’m fine with the Like button, but perhaps removing Booo could be considered.
I’ll also say that this forum should never have some feature on our profiles that shows all the Likes and Booos on our posts tallied together. ‘Like hunting’ has resulted in some super dumb and self-destructive behavior on social medias that do tally up that stuff on an account.
