A movie thread discussing the darker corners of cinema. 10 off the top of my head:
Salo: The 120 Days Of Sodom
Straw Dogs
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Cannibal Holocaust
Irreversible
The Fly
Happiness
Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer
Antichrist
Eyes Without A Face
Cats
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Sausage Party
Disturbing because the cast, for example Salma Heyak, actually thought it was funny. It was shockingly bad.
The saw movies, I love those movies, but they were very unsettling when I first watched them
Some recommendations of mine are Lake Mungo, The Mothman Prophecies, and the French movie Martyrs. Really disturbing films.
Event Horizon.
Requiem for a Dream is one of those films that you’ll only watch one time. One time was more than enough. I can’t disassociate the main theme from the film, so it always freaks me out when I hear it in trailers or video games
I liked The Fly
most disturbing movie Midsommer, good acting, but still disturbing
Salo and Cannibal Holocaust are definitely on the list.
Also check out Grave of the Fireflies (1988). Not your traditional horror/thriller but a beautifully animated, extremely depressing film.
The Disney Star Wars trilogy
I know some disagree but The Blair Witch Project gave me chills. My friends and I even coined the phrase “The Blair Witch Chill” for that short tight-chest feeling when you think back over a movie.
Gone Girl, but it’s disturbing in a good way
A Serbian Film
Martyrs (the original, not the US remake)
Eraserhead
Frontiers
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde
