Hey all,
I’ve been having issues with my N64 Memory Pak. It keeps resetting the games I’m playing. This is definitely an issue that can be fixed with cleaning I think, but does anyone know how to take the dang thing out of its casing?
Memory card or expansion pak?
If it’s official, either way you’re you’re going to need a special screwdriver to open it. It’s not something most people have unless you purposefully buy it. You can find them on ebay for very cheap, a few bucks.
If you can’t get one, you can try to make one out of melting the tip of an empty pen. Then immediately stick it on the head of the screw. The plastic should conform to the screw head. Wait for it to cool and you may be able to open it that way. Just make sure you don’t breathe the fumes.
BTW, if you’re talking about the memory card not saving your games, your battery is probably dead. These batteries are 20+ years old and all have to be replaced eventually.
Wow TheGoodTomKing, that is a really clever trick about melting the pen! It is the Memory Pak that came with DK64 that keeps it from crashing and makes it playable.
Gotcha, so it’s the expansion pak. Nintendo build everything solid in that timeframe and I never heard of any problems with the expansion pak; at least when I was managing a game shop. Open it up, clean it out, and make sure the contacts with the system are clean. Worst case scenario, all you’ll need to do is replace it.
