NHL teams, players notified of enhanced protocols until at least Jan. 7
The decision for enhanced protocols was reached after two days of meetings and worsening conditions across the league on Wednesday as players and staff from three more teams were added to the league’s COVID-19 protocol list.
How bad is it?
Four teams — Calgary, Carolina, Ottawa and the New York Islanders — have had outbreaks force game postponements, a total of 10 in all. But alongside that is a growing number of affected players, who under typical COVID-19 guidance would be tested at least every 72 hours if vaccinated.
How many players are we looking at?
More than 140 NHL players have been on the protocol list this season — including more than two dozen in the last two days — in a league that has proudly noted all but one of its approximately 700 players are considered fully vaccinnated.
Fully jabbed and still breakout cases are happening. What does this mean?
It is a discouraging trend for the league, which plans to allow its players to participate in the Winter Olympics in China in February unless COVID-19 disruptions prove to be too much.
I think it is TOO much.
What do you all think?
I don’t think the NHLPA along with the NHL will be sending players to the CCP Olympics.
Where a player can face a FIVE week quarantine and HAS to have a negative test in order to leave CCP occupied territories.
And with the number of players, coaches and staff in covid protocols and games being postponed, the NHL can use those three weeks to reschedule all those lost games.
Add more teams to that list:
NHL postpones Maple Leafs vs. Canucks game on Saturday
The NHL has postponed two games each for the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs as COVID-19 case counts continue to rise throughout the league.
What else?
The NHL on Saturday said it would postpone all Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators games at least through Dec. 26.
What does this all mean?
The NHL agreed to a break in its schedule to allow players to compete in Beijing (Feb. 4-20) with the caveat that it could withdraw on its own if an abundance of COVID-19 disruptions forced games to be rescheduled during the Olympic window.
The NHL has until Jan. 10 to withdraw from the Beijing Olympics without financial penalty.
Withdrawal.
It is in the best interest of the NHL, the NHLPA, and the your North American fans to NOT risk your players doing to the CCP olympics.
NHL postpones all cross-border games until after Christmas break
The NHL has postponed any cross-border games through the Dec. 23 start of the holiday break, amid the crush of COVID-19 cases in the league.
And the chance of the NHL’s presence at the Beijing Olympics appears to be dwindling.
With close to 100% jab rate, and so many breakthrough infections…
Sunday’s statement also said that, given the disruption the pandemic has already created in the regular-season schedule, with 27 games postponed as of Saturday, and at least 12 more through Dec. 23, there is concern about the Olympics.
“(With) the continued uncertainty caused by the ongoing COVID pandemic, the NHL and NHLPA are actively discussing the matter of NHL Player participation in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, and expect to be in a position to announce a final determination in the coming days,” the statement said.
I would say, for the health and safety of the players, No Olympics.
The league and players’ association agreed to continue the regular-season schedule after the break.
“Although there has been a recent increase in positive COVID test results among players, coaches and hockey staff, there have been a low number of positive cases that have resulted in concerning symptoms or serious illness,” the statement said. “Therefore … medical experts have determined that, with virtually all players and club hockey staff fully vaccinated, the need to temporarily shut down individual teams should continue to be made on a case-by-case basis.”
And create a huge headache for scheduling/logistics.
NHL to pause season from Wednesday through Christmas Day
The NHL will announce a league-wide shutdown for Wednesday through Christmas Day, including games and practices, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.
As alot of people were spectulating.
Rescheduling some of the games for the Olympic break in February — should NHL players not go, a move that has become increasingly likely given the daily surge in COVID infections and additional postponements — is possible in some buildings but not others, as some buildings have previously booked those dates for other events.
The latest wave of coronavirus-related shutdowns Monday led to the closure of facilities for 10 teams. Of the 49 postponements, 44 have come over the past two weeks with the Delta and Omicron variants spreading across North America.
More than 15 per cent of the league’s 700-plus players are in virus protocol, and the resulting schedule disruption almost certainly has doomed the possibility of Olympic participation. A final decision on the Beijing Games is expected this week, and the odds of NHL players returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2014 have cratered.
The Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators on Monday became the latest teams to pause all activities because of positive COVID-19 tests. The Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs also have their facilities closed, and the Calgary Flames just reopened theirs to players, coaches and staff not in protocol.
over 100 players, and countless coaches and staff, in a league that had proudly proclaimed 99% of its personal were fully jabbed. (IIRC, there were like only three players not jabbed at the start of the season)
We still don’t know HOW this breakthrough infections began, and most likely never will.
But the fact people who are fully jabbed and at peak physical health are getting hit, what does that say?
