What’s next for Vegas after trading ‘face of the franchise’ Fleury?
We knew this was a possibility but, still, actually seeing Marc-Andre Fleury get traded out of Vegas brings a shock to the system.
As you said in your article, flat cap and a need to sign other players, it was a numbers decision.
Elliotte Friedman reported after the trade about rumblings that Fleury may retire, if traded, for family reasons. McCrimmon acknowledged that Fleury’s No. 1 preference was to play in Vegas, for a team and city he had fully invested in. Now he takes a step back from a contending team to tend goal for a Blackhawks franchise in the midst of a rebuild they’ve aggressively tried to push ahead this off-season, and one embroiled with troubling off-ice issues.
Even to an Original Six Team with a Rich History, the crime, homicides and other issues there there (rebuilding, off ice issues with the team)… ?
While the Hawks could, theoretically, trade Fleury again and retain some salary for a year — something Vegas didn’t have the flexibility to do — could he actually retire and not play in the NHL again?
Sadly, the current reputation of the city, I can’t see Fleury reporting.
It seems like he will be reporting to the hawks. Honestly, this is not how you should treat your stars, let alone the face of your franchise, and they should have asked him to retire instead of trading him.
I recall the day Wayne Gretzky was traded.
It set a precedence that if the BEST player ever in hockey can be traded, then no one is untradeable.
Some can say Wayne was forced to by his hollywood wife to ask for/get traded to LA, and all the theories around the trade.
Considering how quickly rumours and such are spread in social media/internet, I almost feel sorry the Knights could not get to call Fleury before it was finalized with the league and they could tell him he has been moved.
With how much is left on Fleury’s contract, I am sure he would like to still earn it… maybe not in Chicago. Time will tell, as the trading season has only just began.
What gets me is, Fleury waived his no-trade clause so that Vegas could pick him in the expansion draft. Did not that clause automatically get reinstated after the trade?
Marc-Andre Fleury informs Blackhawks he will play next season
Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has committed to playing for the Chicago Blackhawks this season, setting aside his reservations about leaving Vegas.
“Hey Chicago. It’s Marc, just want to let you know I’m in. Let’s get to work,” Fleury said, standing in front of a small jet, in a video posted by the Blackhawks on their Twitter account Sunday. The Blackhawks also announced a video news conference featuring Fleury and team president Stan Bowman on Monday.
Good for him for not prolonging the uncertainty of if he was to report or retire.
