My point was to state that Ukraine is not really winning.  But maybe Russia isn’t either.  Between fog of war and propaganda I find it hard to discern.   All the mentions you made about moral, approval and the agreement in Finland of the people,  I believe is functionally fairly meaningless.  The machines of war and geo-politics cares nothing for what people think or want.

Well for Ukraine I would say a win considering the situation is if they manage to push Russia back without losing territory, their sovereignty and culture as well as keeping as many people alive as possible. For Russia it’s a bit complicated because even if they manage to capture parts of Ukraine, the whole world basically has turned against them. Russia has also revealed their cards in the terms of military capability, which turned out to be disappointing to say the least. And this is also a problem for Russia and everyone else, they are now far too deep in this operation to back down without gaining at least some territory or control, which is why I believe the war will not end anytime soon since Ukraine will not give an inch for free.

Is it though? Finland wanted to stay neutral and not join NATO for 74 years since the majority opposed joining, but the second the public opinion shifted to joining NATO the paperwork to join was kicked into action.

I don’t know for certain the reasons why but in general I have heard it stated as it’s based on local natural resources.

Not so aure about that. Finland for example has little to none natural resources except for wood while for example Kazakhstan is the world’s largest uranium producer and third in the world in terms of titanium production, seventh for zinc, eighth for lead, and eleventh for gold, yet their GDP per capita is 1/5th. And again, coincidentally, some countries with natural resources coincidentally learned how to utilize it after joining the EU while the others who haven’t joined still are struggling.

If your assertion is that the EU is some bastion of freedom and prosperity in general I would massively disagree. Maybe that was true at some point but the last few decades it is not.

Not at all saying the EU is flawless but they undeniably have done good job in elevating countries in terms of economy. It can’t be said for sure how they would affect today since the results do not appear overnight but I’m pretty confident Ukraine would do a lot better if they leaned towards the west rather than a dictatorship in their easter neighbour country. Overall I’m pretty confident to say it’s a net positive.

I doubt highly any of that has to do with standards or whatever rules the EU makes up for itself.  The EU will do as it pleases to serve itself

But I want my country to keep it’s hands to itself.  The US and parts of the west are meddling non-stop.  I feel confident this was also the case with Ukraine prior to the war.  And that I feel is one more motivation we handed to Putin.

It seems to me that Putin just uses it as an excuse to invade, and the actual reason is more tied to the russian version of lebensraum. Russia has been nonstop acting as an aggressor and invading stuff for a long time without any involvemenf of the west. But I see no problem in assisting countries in war if it’s justified. If some weird alliance of China, Russia etc suddenly attacked the US, committing war crimes left and right and leveling cities everywhere I think you would be pretty happy to see allied country in the west help out, right?
