      It’s different.  There are things I like and some things I don’t but the things I don’t are mostly because it’s not TNG.  But this is like 30 years later (omg I am getting old) so story wise the people, places and stories would indeed be different.

      I like the general progression of the characters, stories and politics of the time.

      There are times when it’s over the top and those are the only real parts I don’t like. Cursing, violence and anything gratuitous is less than Roddenberry like to me.  But the man has been gone for some time so I guess that is to be expected.

      Overall it’s a good continuation of TNG, more dark and gritty than I like to some degree because Star Trek is not supposed to be dark and gritty in my opinion.  But this is within bounds as I see it and is good canon.

      For reference I have not and WILL NOT watch Seasons 1 and 2 and I do not watch Discovery or any other “modern” Trek garbage.  This is my only foray into it.

      Overall this is good.  Not TNG/DS9 good, but pretty good.

        Just watched episode 4.  I very much dislike the bad language because it makes what is supposed to be a forward thinking show overly contemporary.

          I will admit however that enduring the parts I do not care for is worth it for some of that TNG like goodness.

            I am 9 episodes in.  This season 3 is a homage to TNG and possibly that entire era of Trek.  While not perfect (I  dislike the negativity and the dark and gritty)  it is quite glorious.  Episode 9 reveals something that I about swooned over like a giddy child on Christmas morning.

            If you like Trek in the least.  Watch Season 3.  You don’t have to watch the first 2 trash seasons this stands alone.

            Two months ago, I claimed that this would become the AICN Godzilla moment for the community; sadly, it seems that this portent has indeed come to pass.

            It has become increasingly apparent as the series has released that many reviewers such as Cullen and Drinker have compromised their online integrity for either a check from Paramount or studio press access. However, the one who had to have fallen the furthest from this speculation has to be Nerdrotic; Gary, the man who became a refugee from his home state in order to protect those he cares about from insidious corporate-backed politics, is now asking his audience to comfort themselves into submission by suckling at the very same corporate teat. Jeremy and the rest of the G+G crew have to be commended for having remained neutral on this series.

            Clap when you see old people you recognize around a table meant for another crew who is never seen using it even at the most dire of moments. Make memes about your favorite character who has had five minutes of screen time in the last four episodes. Swoon over a CGI ship model like a giddy child on Christmas morning knowing that all Kurtzman had to do was appeal to your nostalgic paraphilia in order to secure his contract for another decade. Picard isn’t worth your submission.

            PS: This is the third thread that has been started about this season. May we presume that the “different direction” of the second still did not fit the narrative you wished to craft for it?

              I personally really like this season (all other new Trek is hot garbage in my opinion)  and I love how it pays what is probably a final tribute to something I enjoyed as a young man. Scoff at that if you wish but once you yourself get a little longer in the tooth you will have an appreciation for nostalgia as well.

              In the way you are free to give a long hateful diatribe about a TV show I am just as free to drone on about liking it.  Notice how I can do so without personal attacks, accusations or pejoratives.

              Everyone is allowed an opinion and to have their preferences and that’s just fine.  But the entire situation of being blinded by hatred that is so thick I can taste it through the monitor just makes you seem like you have an agenda and this tends to invalidate your opinion because it is disingenuous.

              EDIT – My Paramount check just cleared.  I guess I will have to make 3 more posts now.

              @xdax : I 10000000000000000% disagree with every word you typed. I am curious how people liking and enjoying something equates to being a shill? Makes no sense to me to say that. It’s pretty apparent a GREAT many people are enjoying Picard Season 3 that hated Season 1 and 2, and are not Kurtzman Star Trek fans.  Robert Meyer Burnett for example, HATES Kurtzman Trek. He hates anything Trek after the Enterprise TV show actually. But, he loves Picard Season 3. I guess that somehow means he is a shill? Utter nonsense. Is it bad that people find something they enjoy? Am I a shill somehow for loving this season? From your post, it sounds like you are in the Doomcock camp where everything is bad forever because it doesn’t fit his narrow minded and often immature view on things, and then add outlandish and often accusatory reasons why, which is part of why I stopped watching him. Your post even sounds nearly hatefull of people who are enjoying it. So, don’t watch the show and let people who enjoy it, enjoy it.

              Moving on…

              @Vknid
              : I have GREATLY enjoyed this season. And I mean GREATLY. This to me is what Star Trek has been missing since Enterprise went off the air. I have gotten tears in my eyes more than once watching the 9 episodes so far. It makes me feel young again (I am 48) enjoying the things I used to enjoy before they were butchered by corporate idiocy and identity politics. I grew up on Star Trek (well, Star Wars and sci fi too), my mom was a bit of a Trekkie, so the movies were always being watched. I remember going to the theatre when Wrath of Khan came out and seeing my mom cry like a child when Spock died.

              The newest Episode 9….the last 5-10 min are just GOD D**N RIDICULOUS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! There have been a few times this season where I just kind of sat for a moment to absorb what I had just seen. It’s just been so enjoyable to me.

              Robert Meyer Burnett was right and people didn’t want to believe him. Well, now we know he was right! I suggest you watch his aftershow/review that has cast members and writers from the show. It’s really good, and inciteful. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlVHxkCWEliTSX-SPgtFBTj3989_tDtT7

                @DarthVengeant

                As you might recall we are nearly the same age so I am with you 100% on the relevance and importance of season 3.  In my opinion Season 3 is something special as it is likely (almost assuredly) the final time we see the TNG crew together. And the opportunity for that is being fully taken advantage of as they are essentially creating a TNG Mini-series out of this season that pays homage to the TNG era of Trek and TNG itself.

                Now, to avoid spoilers I won’t mention what happened at the end of episode 9 but when it did and I saw that I swooned.  What an amazing thing for Trek to have that moment.  I actually sincerely hope it was special for the actors as well.

                Now compare this to how Star Wars had all their aging actors for a final time and absolutely butchered the opportunity.

                I watch the old TNG series over every so often as not only do I love it but I have fond memories of that time surrounding it.  I am going to watch Season 3 of Picard every so often as well.

                @Vknid :What this really is, is the movie we never got. The final send off they deserved. Because lets be honest, the TNG movies aren’t very good.

                And ya, the end of EP 9 was a doozy. I was literally yelling “holy sh*t” repeatedly at 4am (that’s when I watched it since I live on nights) in my house with joy. But, there were other moments in this season where I did the same thing. Especially when a certain character came back….

                Another thing I am really enjoying is how things tie in to the past, characters from the past, and events in the past. We get explanations for things we never thought we would, or even thought about. The writers did a excellent job here.
