“Revenge of the Nerds”- 1984 – A lesson on oppression

In 1984 “Revenge of the Nerds” came out.  Have you seen it?

It’s a group of unpopular guys/girls in their freshmen college year battling the jocks for popularity.

That group was made up of:

-computer nerds

-Asian guys

-overweight girls

-and a cast of other typically unpopular folks at school including a flamboyant gay black guy

So somehow, in 1984 these folks were able to work together and become popular at school and the only division was popular people and less popular people.

The movie did not draw lines in any other direction and no one had an issue with anyone else.

In the 80s and 90s everyone typically accepted everyone else that I can recall.  Things did not get sideways until Obama was elected. His campaign made race THE issue.  One can ponder on whether that is what got all the division started and whether that was an intentional or unintentional  downstream consequence of that campaign.
