Noice! Gonna binge watch after all the episodes have dropped. It’s impossible to avoid spoilers but I’m gonna try my darnedest!

I just watched half of episode 1.  It’s harking back so much to TNG I had to take an emotional break :P  But so far so good, and I have seen nothing that annoyed me.  I am watching S3 standalone as well.

      It’s shit.

-“STAR TREK” brand title drop. Trying to follow in the footsteps of modern Star Wars is just embarrassing.
-Crusher’s phase rifle holds about 20 rounds when Kirk-era phasers could be used on “thousands”.  Also, why does the weapon of war announce to enemy combatants that its rounds are exhausted?
-It was smart of Paramount to retitle the series “Star Trek Picard” at the last minute, general audiences probably wouldn’t understand the subtleties of the Starfleet naming convention “1080p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DDP5.1”. (Ha ha ha.)
-The mementos during Picard’s house cleaning were all chosen specifically to reference Red Letter Media.  The Generations review is over a decade old at this point, but referencing it is akin to the Juggernaut line in X-Men: The Last Stand.
-Raffi’s script got mixed in with an old episode of 24.  At least they had the decency to not put her in Section 31.
-Was there a huge budget cut this season?  The starbase and some establishing shots aren’t up to previous quality.
-Transwarp factor nomenclature would have an in-universe revision if ships were to accelerate to warp 9.99 out of space dock.  Cute reference to Threshold, but the idea doesn’t feel lived-in.
-Frakes deserves an Emmy for stepping back into the Riker role.  The man is single-handedly carrying both Stewart and Ryan through this series.
-Are they really bringing back Picard’s brain disease despite the fact he’s a robot?  Does Paramount think its audience so disposable that they are ignoring everything from the first season?  The dramatic sting in the score does not inspire confidence.
-Raffi, when Nordberg said “The Red Lady”, he was telling you the name of the ship.
-Shaw wakes up from the auditory rumble of the cloud.  In space.
-“Quantum tunneling” is a well-defined concept in physics and has nothing to do with sling ring portals straight out of Doctor Strange.
-Picard made a classical music mixtape for Crusher consisting only of songs from one single decade.  I had a good laugh at this point formulating an improv where Jean-Luc imparts on Beverly the auditory beauty of Skrillex’s Purple Lamborghini.
-Picard’s British accent is apparently hereditary.  One rung up the ladder from “Picard’s son is also bald”.
-Main credits right out of the MCU.  They REALLY wish they were Disney.
-Should they get credit for including the classic soundtrack?  Even though Rings of Power‘s music didn’t always work, at least they attempted to make new tracks.

4/10.  7/10 as a sci-fi soporific for senior citizens who want to be swaddled by a multi-billion dollar media company.

In my history of watching TV shows I have never watched anything twice, other than years later etc. Well, I watched episode one again. I really love this. I feel like a kid again.

I think TNG and DS9 were peak Star Trek. But this is pretty good so far.

Ok, so I binged Eps 1 – 9 over the last two days and just got through the finale.

My initial thoughts? Very good season, fans of traditional “Star Trek” will generally be pleased.

My favorite episodes were 5, 8 and 9; favorite sequence in this season: the final 10 minutes of episode 9.

Acting was excellent by actors both old and young. Great casting choices as well, especially Captain Shaw.

The main story was good, intricately woven with ties to the Next Generation Television Series — that continuity was greatly appreciated. I can see that serving as impetus for those not familiar with the old show to give it a go.

There are some obvious plot holes but given they only had 10 episodes there must be some suspension of disbelief. What kinda pissed me off though was the blatant rip-offs of Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars.

It ended “on a good note” but was a bit anti-climatic given the excellent build up of the preceding episodes. Then again, had it been any other ending it wouldn’t have been “Star Trek” and I would probably be complaining about that…LOL.

        Rating: 8/10.

As someone who loved TNG as a young man (and still do as I rewatch it every so often) I loved every minute of it. I feel like TNG is now complete.  I will rewatch Season 3 of Picard every so often as I do TNG and DS9.

Watching that season I feel like I was able to jump back in time to the late 80’s for a brief period and and experience TNG again.

I enjoyed waiting each week eagerly for those 10 episodes just as I did for TNG so many years ago.

Call it nostalgia, call it me commiserating my aging with theirs.

I don’t care what you call it.  I loved it.

Some thoughts on the finale and the series:

          • The wholesale theft of the third act of Return of the Jedi is so egregious that Disney stands a chance of avenging Anas in court.  There is no way in which a scenes à faire excuse would hold up in front of a judge.
          • Terry must have forgot that Raffi was a captain, as her presence in the obvious sequelbait series strains credulity more than Riker spending 15 years under Picard.  There were also strange lines in the finale from both Raffi and Seven, as if they were delivering lines of dialogue meant for the other instead of themselves.
          • Personal negative, but I hate the cool main cast outfits.  I understand that it comes from Picard having to look unique and production not wanting another Generations scenario with mix-and-match uniforms, but did Geordi really need one as well?
          • Stewart’s reaction upon seeing the Enterprise makes me wonder how the first 20 producers had so little control over him, and what Terry hung over his head to get him to actually act for once.
          • A toy maker couldn’t ask for a better deal than being able to sell both the Titan and the Enterprise-G, both made from the exact same mold with different registry number decals, twice over to addicted fans.  Perhaps they could create artificial scarcity for the Enterprise and add a 0 to the price tag for a “Special Collector’s Edition” version?
          • I don’t know if it came up in Voyager, but wouldn’t unknown cultures that have had previous contact with the Borg naturally be in fear of Seven?  I understand that she’s fit for a command position, but why is she leading an exploratory mission?  This is only exacerbated by her desire to use her Borg name, jeopardizing galactic diplomacy for her own ego.

It’s nowhere near as bad as anything such as Rings of Power, Doctor Who, or Watchmen.  It’s nowhere close to the quality of House of the Dragon either.  It’s impressive that Terry managed to accomplish this with so little budget and time, but I can’t see this standing the test of time in the way First Contact has.  Moreover, this series left me with no desire for anything more from this universe.  Trek is due for a reboot, but in this decade, there is no one worth trusting with the property.

I might work on a laundry list of criticisms for this series (such as Worf having a backstory clearly set up for his character only to be reduced to comic relief in the back half), but the show almost isn’t worth engaging on that level.  The true drama is from those who would happily take 30 pieces of silver to sell their audience on mediocrity.

          “Trust no one,” indeed, Beverly.

Absolute banger of a season imo. I couldn’t be happier. I’ve posted about my enjoyment of this season on here enough times already.

I liked the post credits scene and what that could mean moving forwards. As long as the same people who did Season Three do it….
