Which movie had the best Merlin?
I am personally fond of the film King Arthur (2004) with Clive Owen…it is definitely cheesy at parts but I love the characters and their arcs…cast is pretty great too
There is no equal.
While I got agree the parady/comedy of Monty Python and The Holy Grail is a great film, but as a strictly serious King Arthur movie, I would have to say Excalibur.
Hands down.
Excalibur is a 1981 American epic medieval fantasy film directed, produced, and co-written by John Boorman that retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, based on the 15th-century Arthurian romance Le Morte d’Arthur by Thomas Malory. It stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Gabriel Byrne as Uther Pendragon, Corin Redgrave as Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, and Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature. The film’s soundtrack features the music of Richard Wagner and Carl Orff, along with an original score by Trevor Jones.
Tis only a flesh wound!
Yeah, I’d say Excalibur too.
It should’ve been a trilogy though as it always felt too condensed even as a kid. It could’ve been our R rated Star Wars. Same with Conan the Barbarian but Milius left Conan cause he was burned out but I think he was riding high on his success at the time in part as well .
I love King Arthur (2004) too. I watch it on HBO the other. Cast was very good.
Spot on there! I love what Oliver Stone said of Conan saying it should have been like Bond Arnold coming back every few years to reprise the role! Ah the possibilities!
Excalibur wins but I have a soft spot for Sword and the Stone!
Excalibur is such a weird film. The incest. The grail. Patrick Stewart’s hilarious acting. Liam Neeson’s first big film mind you. Nicol Williamson was terrific as Merlin and Helen Mirren bringing it. Never cared for Nigel Terry he was way too ah shucks for Arthur.
I personally was very disappointed in the Clive Owen film. Owen is great but the villains were awful as was Keira.
I preferred Gabriel Byrne’s Uther to Nigel’s weakling Arthur . I thought Byrne stole the movie but was hardly in it,lol. Has the best line too, “Nobody shall wield Excalibur but ME! “
I LOVE THESE TWO.
