Hmm, looks like my post didn’t show up🤔…
“I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In)” is an English Christmas carol, listed as number 700 in the Roud Folk Song Index. The earliest printed version of “I Saw Three Ships” is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833
The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century.
Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as “ships of the desert”.
Yeah, I was definitely thinking the 3 wise men interpretation.
Since it’s that time of the year again, here’s some of my favourite snow-level music in video games. I know a lot of people don’t usually like snow levels because they’re challenging but I enjoy them😍.
Also, sticking with Christmas film soundtracks, here’s another favourite of mine. Had ‘The Polar Express’ on last week…and I’ve had the soundtrack stuck in my head all week as a result😂!
Less than a week to go and things are really starting to ramp up.
Every year I add to the decorations by purchasing 1 or 2 items that catch my eye. Unique ones are becoming a lot harder to find…lots of mass produced junk out there.
If you have the time it’s a good opportunity for DIYers as well, a nice exercise to do with the family. Made a couple of tree toppers, one out of paper and one out of a Pepsi can; yes, injuries were sustained during fabrication of the latter.
I like people crafty like that. Could not find a version of this song that I liked, so if you know one, feel free to share.
“Good King Wenceslas” is a Christmas carol that tells a story of a Bohemian king who goes on a journey, braving harsh winter weather, to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen.
Good King Wenceslas” (Roud number 24754) is a Christmas carol that tells a story of a Bohemian king (modern-day Czech Republic) who goes on a journey, braving harsh winter weather, to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen (December 26, the Second Day of Christmas). During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king’s footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. The legend is based on the life of the Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (907–935), who was not a king but a duke.
Wenceslas was considered a martyr and a saint immediately after his death in the 10th century, when a cult of Wenceslas rose up in Bohemia and in England
But his deeds I think you know better than I could tell you; for, as is read in his Passion, no one doubts that, rising every night from his noble bed, with bare feet and only one chamberlain, he went around to God’s churches and gave alms generously to widows, orphans, those in prison and afflicted by every difficulty, so much so that he was considered, not a prince, but the father of all the wretched.
Glad you mentioned injuries working with those Aluminum cans. I thought it was just me that is kind of wary about that. Great material to work with, but sharp as hell and you really gotta be careful. Really admire the craftsmen that work with their hands though.
This is a song I never heard before. I heard some old lady talking about Brenda Lee, but she seems to have been like an older version of a pop star. Someone I do not know nor have ever been into, but I happened to hear the song downtown and it did make me laugh.
The other one, which I’m not sure I’ll post, might have been Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Tony Bennett. Another guy who I considered kind of an old geezer crooner, but the horns and trumpets were so damn hot and blaring. Like, the explosive sounds of those trumpets are on a Mariachi level and I couldn’t help but really like that Big Band swingin’ style of Holiday music.
Anyway, I dig this Brenda Lee song because it just sounds so country. Like, front porch swing pickin’ music. There you go. She’s from Georgia, the red-clay belt.
Brenda Lee recently released a video for her classic Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree which has led to resurgence in her popularity this year…the thing spent 2 weeks at #1 and she broke a few records in the process. Good on her.
That song along with others like The Chipmunk Song encompass the secular aspect of the season without tapping heavily into the religious aspect of it. Nothing’s wrong with that so long as it does not supplant that which is holy.
In the same vein, here’s another that’s really upbeat. Wonder what this li’l guy is doing now?
Do you have an Ice Rink downtown where you live? I sometimes go there and it was packed on a weekday. Here is Wollman Rink, one of the first and made famous by a certain candidate. It’s a great story, the story of Wollman Rink. Now, I think every modern downtown puts them up in December, which is a more recent thing and they play Christmas music while the people ice skate.
We had one a few years ago but it was a “blink and you’ll miss it” Ice Rink. It got heavily criticised for being dull and boring. Judging from what I can remember og the photos at the time, I had to agree with it. My sister had also went there and she said it was a let down.
I’m only familiar with the Wollman Park Ice Rink because of this music video😅. It can be seen briefly during it along with other places in New York.
How are your preparations coming? Went out early this morning to get a few things and by 10:00 it was crazy. Be safe out there.
Been decorating family member’s trees (including my own) for most of this week😂. Going to be decorating a friend of my mum’s tree tomorrow so hopefully that’ll be the last one. Presents are all wrapped up and delivered too.
I got my family their gifts, and just need to wrap them.
I couldn’t resist, mateys…
