Almost hard to believe this is fifteen years old, now.
Released in 2006 as a fifteenth anniversary game, Sonic Team decided to return to the prospect of a Sonic racing game, but with a slight twist of putting everyone on hoverboards. The game even had a full-feature story mode as the golden trio were paired off against a new team rivals, the Babylon Rogues: Brute-head Storm the Albatross, street-smart Wave the Swallow and the arrogant Jet the Hawk.
I’ve only ever the played the game once, so I don’t remember it’s features all too well, other than it being hard as nails. Literally ripped the skin from the palm of my hand from circling the thumbstick too hard during the last stage. Still beat the game but ow. Did not play any games for a few days after that.
“Even if the entire world becomes my enemy… I shall fight like I always have.”
Shadow was GOAT.
Before moving on the next console generation, it’s worth dropping Sonic X, the second anime to come out of Sonic’s native country:
Real fond memories of getting home from high school and getting the latest fansub episode. It was a pleasure to watch the Adventure games get adapted onto the TV screen (though they weren’t quite as gripping as the game versions, imo).
(Fun fact: The third season, which features Sonic and co in an original story as they go up against anthropomorphic plants, was produced but never aired in Japan until last year. Purist fans like myself had to make do with a French dub back in 2000s. It was odd).

Ah, 2006. Hard to believe it’s been fifteen years, now. Meant to be a “relaunch” of the brand, what was initially dubbed as “Sonic Next-Gen,” behind-the-scenes politics saw this game being released after only six months of development and as a result we got Sonic’s most poorly received entry into the franchise yet (at least as far as the mainline series is concerned). To be honest, I’m sort of glad this game got the reception it did because it took the franchise in a direction I wasn’t exactly fond of, so I’m glad this forced Sonic Team to go back to the drawing board.
One thing that’s always consistently good about Sonic games? The soundtrack. They should’ve kept on “His World” as Sonic’s theme much like they did with the Eggman leitmotif.
Dusty Desert (Quicksand)
Dusty Desert (The Ruins) – OH GOD THAT FUCKING BALL
Flame Core (Volcano)
Flame Core (Cavern) – The theme song of Arin and Jon’s beautiful little moment.
Radical Train (Abandoned Mine)
Radical Train (Mach Speed)
Vs. Character – “In my darkest hour, I looked at him in the eyes and said… IT’S NO USE.”
One other good thing to come from this game: Shadow’s story, which was more interesting than the main plot itself.
“It’s futile. The world will betray you. Why fight at all? Why risk your life over those who will persecute you later?”
“Even if the world chooses to become my enemy… I will fight like I always have.”
