For those who are wondering what I am talking about when I say isekai, simply put…it means an alternate world from reality or…as some would put it RPG (role playing).  Chronologically for me, what really started getting me into the genre…is dot hack.  The story and concept was pretty straight forward for me and I do admit that I did sometimes stay up late at night to watch it.  This, in turn, got me into the games (although I didn’t finish 3 and I didn’t have the final volume; but I did own all 3 of dot hack G.U., which is a continuation of dot hack ROOTS), and I have read the manga spin off (Tasogare no Udewa Densetsu) as well as the light novels that tie into the anime itself (including the game explanation novels told from the real life character of BlackRose’s perspective).  The usual premise of being trapped in a game and then trying to get out of it is something that got my attention because of an objective that sounds engaging and interesting. (To be honest, as an anime fan I think this is SEVERELY underrated and overlooked historically). Later, I got into another anime that got me into the realm of fantasy from the creators of CLAMP (those who know what company this is know exactly the titles that come to mind)…more specifically…Magic Knight’s Rayearth.  This is actually the second magical girl genre anime that I watched but I actually started backwards to a point.  I watched the OAV (which has a different premise) before watching the anime itself and reading the manga.

Now to get to the point at hand, I have watched Rise of the Shield Hero and despite the SJWs whining and bitching about how it’s for cis-anime fans (to hell with them)…I found the plot and story well made and the main hero understandable and in a way relatable.  Still currently writing and researching and have yet to read the light novel (although I plan to) but this is both my thoughts and my explanation on how I got into the isekai genre.  Granted that there are others that some fans know about but I can’t help but question how many know and comprehend the ones that I just brought up.  That being said, what got you guys into this genre if ever and what stands out to you?  Sound off anime fans.

The earliest examples of series that have the main characters transported to a different world for me are probably:

    Magic Knight’s Rayearth

    Fushigi Yuugi

    Escaflowne

I was pretty into all of .hack’s lore during that timeframe. I watched all of .hack//sign, played the original ps2 games and watched the OVA’s that came with them, read the novels, watched .hack//roots, played all the .hack//G.U games. I really enjoyed all of .hack once it was all put together since in order to get the full picture of the story, you kind of had to.

I did watch the first season of Sword Art Online and tried to play one of the first SAO games on the vita, but couldnt get into it. I watched the SAO movie because it was randomly on TV one day when I was flipping through the channels.

I’ve fallen off watching a lot of anime lately though so I haven’t been following anything more recent.

.hack was my first as well. Then I went into the videogames all the way through GU, though I did not watch that anime, because it came out after the games and I didn’t care.

Escaflowne is a classic, and the alternate movie version is also great. Inuyasha still holds up (curious how good the sequel series will be in the Fall).

I admit, I’m a sucker for most of these series. Love SAO and Log Horizon. Reincarnated as a Slime was a surprise hit for me. I never expected to love that one so much. Overlord…hell yeah. So much fun. Always wanted more of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, it was so gritty and solid.

Twelve Kingdoms….I watch this once a year. Still holding out hope they’ll animate the rest.

Really enjoying The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? this last season. Also liked Infinite Dendogram. I’d like more of it.

And yes, Shield Hero is fucking brilliant, though the end of the first season is a little messy because it does not jive with the manga. But I can understand why it stopped, because there is not enough manga source material right now.

They are not all puppies and unicorn farts, though. Endride, Gate, and Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody I found terrible.

I admit that I found Mimiru and BlackRose (same weapon class) both hot.

I gotta go with Alkaid and Pi.

I need to finally get around to buying the remaster so I can play Last Recode.

Oh…no doubt that Alkaid is hot.

I started i think with Escoflowne kind of and i the know the .Hack//Sign series as i little boy . And Digimon kinda like fits too it a little bit. But my favorite (was) Sword Art Online( The novels are even now) . I recommend Bofuri or Overlord Anime.

I guess technically Digimon would be my first isekai, then .Hack//Sign. Overlord was the first isekai that really got me into the genre and inspired my own book series.

Mine would be “Digimon Adventure 01” and it still holds up pretty well. Watching it in original is recommended. Then I guess it was “Sword Art Online” anime. I did enjoyed it quite a bit and and still am. And then “The Rising of the Shield Hero”, “Konosuba” and “Re: Zero” which are the best ones right now in my opinion. I did watch also “Overlord”, but it was just okay.
