What did the DCEU do that just made you mad, or if you like it, tell me what you love
Great topic!
I have so much to say, Obviously most people know I can’t stand Man of Steel or Batman v Superman – I understand there are people out there that do, but I hate those movies. I think the casting is as good as anyone could have possibly imagined, But ultimately the riding around these characters is terrible.
But there are things I do like about the DCEU, specifically Wonder Woman. It’s one of my top 10 or 15 comic book films of all-time – Gal Gadot OWNED the role!
I think Suicide Squad is a bad movie, but I find things about it that I do enjoy. I like a lot of the characters but unfortunately it just didn’t come together like it should.
I thoroughly enjoyed Aquaman and I think Jason Momoa is a fantastic choice for the role.
Those are the things that stand out to me, good and bad, but I’m looking forward to hearing what everyone else has to say
JEREMY! Been watching your channel since the last Jedi, huge fan,
my opinion on the DCEU is I like Man Of Steel, I was probably just at the right age for that film, great casting, great action, and the score, My God I LOVE the music, probably my favorite DCEU film, I know it’s not perfect though
Dawn Of Justice and Justice League were bad, there were some good things like the flash and wonder woman but overall the films lacked fun, so I wouldn’t watch them again easily
suicide squad was trash. Did like Harley Quinn though, she was sexy and crazy
Wonder Woman…Fantastic, looking forward to the next one, and the best part. There are no identity politics in it.
Aquaman surprised me, it made me look forward to DC films more, Good Movie
Shazam was great. It was so fresh for the DCEU. It was fun and exciting in a way that not even marvel had, looking forward to the sequel and Black Adam
Haven’t even seen Birds of Prey and don’t plan on it. Even if it’s good, Politics make me uninterested in something
I’ve never been a big DC fan, and the DCEU is not something that I have enjoyed much.
I saw Man of Steel at a pre-screening, and I’ll be honest, its my favorite of the bunch. Not for the story. Not for the characters. Not for the score. Not for the portrayal of Superman (though I think Cavill is great in that role). I liked it for the action. I liked seeing a Superman that had to go all-out to deal with a threat that had no regard for the lives around him. I’ve always liked the style that Snyder uses when directing action scenes, and watching the fights against the Kryptonians showed me moments that I can only describe as “anime moments”. It looked like a live-action DBZ fight. Two people with god-level power fighting in the middle of a city that was destroyed as a result. I’m not saying it was a good movie. But I enjoyed it. At this point, almost all of the enjoyment I derive from the DCEU comes from these “anime moments”.
BVS had a garbage story, and had no “anime moments” to redeem it. Its a bad film overall, which is par for the course with the DCEU films.
Wonder Woman and Aquaman were fine, but I still think they are overpraised by people who just expected them to be bad. I enjoyed the films overall (and Gal Gadot was great). But, the stories were just alright. Not good, not bad. Pretty average place holder films that helped to flesh out the world a little better. The only real “anime moment” that stuck in my mind was a chase-punch during Aquaman’s underwater arena fight like you’d see in DBZ.
I enjoyed Shazam. It was a good deviation from their standard “dark” formula. A fun change of pace. The story, again, not great, but passable.
Justice League was obviously terrible, but I look forward to seeing the Snyder cut. I’m hoping his directorial vision at least helps to improve it a little. The one visual piece I enjoyed was when the Superman turns to look at the Flash as he runs past him. #AnimeMoment.
Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad, and any others I’m missing don’t really even deserve to be discussed do they?
Anyway, that’s my overly simplified breakdown of my thoughts. Most of it just comes down to “I thought some of the fights were cool I guess”.
Man of Steel was decent, but not really Superman…Shazam was a fun ride…but I had no real desire to watch it again. The rest are just hot messes that have mostly good casting and interesting concepts but are very poorly executed. Everything Snyder does is style or substance
MoS was a great way to kick off the DCEU (as a MoS defender myself, despite its overall flaws) but it pretty much hit the crapper pretty much immediately right after, even though the DCEU does have its good moments post-MoS (WW and Shazam) I think it can be redeemed and if there is a time to redeem it, that time has to be now.
MoS a movie on its own it’s ok, but as a superman movie its not that good.
Where the DCEU went wrong….getting rid of Snyder during JL’s production and hiring the hack Whedon. Where the DCEU went right….giving Zack the chance to finish his movie properly now.
-Man of Steel is a pretty bad movie that doesn’t make much sense, nor does it feel like a Superman movie. It’s also a terrible start to the universe. Not as bad as TFA, but you just can’t destroy Metropolis in your first movie.
-BVS is really bad. Like MoS, not much really makes much sense. All the build-up and tension made throughout the movie is rendered pointless and resolved in one line. It tries to do way to many things and doesn’t land any of them.
-Suicide Squad is a garbage movie. At least, MoS and BVS, are actual movies. Suicide Squad is just a series of music videos with a final battle tacked on.
-Wonder Woman is pretty good even though it has one of the worst third acts of any movie ever.
-Justice League is a hobbled together mess of a film has no right to be as bad as it is.
-Aquaman is really fun. I especially loved the costumes and how they fully embraced the campiness of the source material.
-Shazam was fantastic. It reminds me of those kids movies from the eighties, like Goonies or Gremlins. Can’t wait to see its sequel.
-Birds of Prey fails at almost everything. All its characters are poorly defined and basically remain static for the entire movie, especially Huntress. Harley is a terrible protagonist who has no stakes in the story and doesn’t drive anything. Black Mask is meh, I guess, but his plan is completely nonsensical.
Casting is A+ for the main Superheros. Unfortunately some of the villains didn’t work for me in these DC movies lately. Wonder Woman was good but the ending villain was poorly done. Aquman looked incredible in 3D and Jason Mamoa was great. But the movie was kind of dumb and felt more like a Marvel film. Batman vs Superman was trash because of the slow pacing and bad script. Suicide Squad had a bad script with good casting. The Villain didn’t work for me here. The Joker movie was great. I didnt like Justice League because I don’t like having that many Superheroes in one movie. I hated Shazam because it was just dumb full of jokes and bad acting. A lot of Marvel fans like it because they love dumb superhero movies.. Birds of Woke is trash. I think the origin stories are the best when done right and don’t go woke. I dont like Marvel Avengers either. Going forward I think DC needs to make sure they do a better job with getting good villains and good scripts. Dont go woke with Wonder Woman… Dont be dumb like Marvel..
I’ll admit something right off the bat: I’m not a Superman fan. I never liked the Christopher Reeve movies, never liked his character in any of the DC comics or animated movies/shows. Every single member of the Justice League is more interesting to me than Superman. So when I say that I love Man of Steel, I’m saying that I love it, as a person who is not generally a Superman fan. This may be linked to the fact that a lot of long-time superman fans don’t like that film. It’s a film that makes a hero palatable to people who don’t necessarily like Superman already. Make of that what you will.
I also LOVE Batman v. Superman. As far as my favorite superhero movie, it’s between BvS, Avengers(2012), or Avengers: Infinity War. If Justice League had included Green Lantern and not been rewritten to be more Joss Whedony, I think it would be in the conversation as well. I am cautiously optimistic about the Snyder Cut, but I still think Green Lantern’s abscence will hurt it. Any Justice League film without Green Lantern will feel incomplete.
Overall, however, I like the DCEU. It has had its misfires(looking at you, Suicide Squad/Birds of Prey), but it has several fantastic films in there that I think make the journey worth it.
Individually, I would rate the films of the DCEU as follows:
Man of Steel: A+
Batman v. Superman: A+
Suicide Squad: C+
Wonder Woman: A-
Justice League: B
Aquaman: A+
Shazam: B+
Birds of Prey: D
Have you seen Shazam yet? That movie and Wonder Woman are easily my two favorites.
What the DCEU has gotten right:
Nearly all of the casting, especially Cavill, Affleck, Gadot, Mamoa, and Levi
Some top tier villains like Zod, Orm, and Sivana
Hans Zimmer
What the DCEU has gotten wrong:
WB cutting way too much out of the BvS theatrical release and totally butchering JL
Most of Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey
Giving Harley freaking Quinn 3 movies before a Man of Steel sequel and films for Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter
