One of my favorite Nintendo series that I played over the course of 2020 was Xenoblade Chronicles, specifically Xenoblade 1 and 2 on the Switch (didn’t play X). I had a blast playing both of the games, with their unique combat systems and world design. Heck, Xenoblade 2 is my second-most played game on the Switch, only losing to Smash Bros. Ultimate. Also, I haven’t played the Torna DLC since I don’t own it yet, nor have I played Future Connected.
Personally, my favorite characters in the first game are Shulk, Reyn, Melia, Fiora, Dunban, Alvis and Egil, while my favorite characters in the second game are Mythra, Nia, Zeke, Poppi, Pandoria, Morag, Jin, Mikhail, Malos, and Bana.
One thing that sets the games apart from most other Nintendo franchises is that they have a lot of voice acting, not just in the 10+ hours of cutscenes in both games, but also the battles, with such funny quotes as “Now it’s Reyn time,” or “Let’s press on and on AND ON,” or the unfortunately patched, “Think you can take me? Don’t forget me!” No, Captain Padraig, I’ll never forget you.
The soundtracks in these games are also amazing, with nice field tracks such as Satorl Marsh, Valak Mountain, Spirit Crucible Elyps, Mor Ardain, and, my favorite, Agniratha. There’s also some amazing battle themes, like You Will Know Our Names, You Will Recall Our Names, Mechanical Rhythm, and Those Who Stand Against Our Path, as well as amazing boss battle tracks, like An Obstacle In Our Path, A Tragic Decision, ***** the Divine, The Power of Jin, and [name redacted] – The Acting God. And those are just some of my favorites.
Overall, I’d like to know if you’ve played these two games, and what you think of them. I’d love to discuss this series with anyone here. If you’re interested in playing these games, but are unsure about how it works, don’t worry, the game explains it’s mechanics pretty well during the beginning of the game. Also, make sure to play Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition first. It’s the first in the series, as well as the easier of the two to understand.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is my favorite game ever. Many people like the first one more and it’s definitely my favorite Wii game, but I played 2 first and loved it. From the music to the characters and story to the complex gameplay and side quests that help build the world, this game is truly amazing. Both Xenoblade Chronicles games (haven’t played X yet but hoping for a switch port) are amazing and more people need to play them. My favorite songs are Drifting Soul, Mor Ardain day theme, Indol theme, You will Recall Our Names, Tantel, Gormott, One Last You (Xenoblade 2 credits song), Gaur Plains, Satoru Marsh, You will know our names, Alcamoth, Beyond the Sky, Torna Battle theme, and Moment of Eternity. My favorite characters are Mythra, Reyn, Zekenator, Shulk, Morag, Nia and Vandam. Xenoblade Chronicles is my second favorite series, with only Smash Bros beating it.
I’ve only played X on the Wii U. It’s the only remaining Wii U exclusive that makes me regret trading in my Wii U to Gamestop, as every other Wii U game worth anything has been given an enhanced Switch port.
For this reason, it really gets under my skin that Smash Ultimate completely passed over anything from X barring some minor jpegs for Spirits. Uncontrollable, The Key We’ve Lost, and aBOreSSs would have been great music to fight to just to name a few, not to mention Elma would have been a great character for Smash.
I hope X gets ported to the switch. I’d rather play it on the go than just at home where my Wii U is, especially if it’s a long game.
I still have the original Xenoblade for the Wii. Got the Definitive Edition. Put in 900 hours on X and I absolutely demolished XBC2. I’m ready for an XBC3 or X2 or even a port of X.
I’ve only been playing through Xenoblade 2, but I do like it. The story is quite good, and the characters are entertaining and cool. Hard to really think of a specific character I think of as a favorite for that reason, but Nia, Pyra, Zeke, and Malos stand out to me at the moment. I got over 60 hours in the game, and I think I’m only slightly less than 3/4 of the way done.
Gameplay took some time for me to get used to, most notably with the blade combos, becuase I couldn’t find a way to revisit tutorials/instructions on combat in the game itself, which kind of sucks. Finding some how-to videos on that helped sort that out at least.
I just wish the movement speed was at least slightly faster outside of battle, because the maps can be so large. Feels like it takes me longer to get around places than necessary.
