TRAILER: Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 (2025)

Yesterday, Netflix and DR Movie Co. put out the first full trailer for Castlevania: Nocturne season 2. Nocturne takes place around 300 years after the events of Castlevania, the animated series based on the popular video game franchise, and follows Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor and Sypha. The series is an adaptation of the games Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. You can see the trailer here:

I thought season 1 of Nocturne was only okay for a number of reasons. In fairness, the original Castlevania show got better over time, and the first season is definitely the weakest one. But Richter, Maria, and Annette don’t have any of the appeal of Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard. Even more importantly, they don’t play off of one another as well as that trio did. I also didn’t enjoy the art style as much after the first show constantly oozed eye candy. Nocturne isn’t ugly; it’s still fluid, high-budget animation. But I liked the first show’s style more, and I miss Powerhouse, the first show’s animation studio.

Castlevania: Nocturne

The way Alucard is drawn in the Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 trailer when he’s seated and bantering with Richter is an excellent example of what I don’t like visually. I also think the plot was a downgrade; I can remember every season of Castlevania really well years later, but Castlevania: Nocturne was just last year, and the only thing I remember well is Alucard saving the day at the end. I think the show has a lot of room to improve and might well do so. Season 1 was fun enough as it was, just not great. And I don’t understand the slavery subplot, which, from my understanding, wasn’t in the games. But this could work better over time, especially if Annette gets more likable. Season 1 of Castlevania: Nocturne had eight episodes to work with, compared to Castlevania’s inaugural season, which was only four episodes. That’s only about the length of a feature film.

Castlevania: Nocturne

With that being said, the Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 trailer is awesome. It’s visually beautiful and very epic in tone. The action looks amazing, but my favorite part is the exchange between Annette and Alucard: “Are all Belmonts like this?” “Irritating? Oh, yes.” James Callis’ line delivery as Alucard never misses. I know I will still miss his dynamic with Trevor and Sypha, especially Trevor. But if this scene in the trailer is any indication, he could have a fun back-and-forth with Annette. This also indicates a level of annoyance with Richter, but I hope and assume Alucard’s relationship with him will be different enough from what he had with Trevor. Juste Belmont also gets a badass action scene in the Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 trailer, which I can’t wait to see in full. Season 1’s marketing looked great, too, so I don’t want to get too excited for a season that may only be okay. I think the dragon that seemingly joins Maria is a little goofy. It’s well-animated, but seriously? Vampires vs. dragons? It just seems a bit much. But the first show had Isaac discussing religion with a demon who resembled a fly, and it’s one of the best scenes in the whole show.  I’ll wait to see what context is given for the dragon.
