Today saw the release of a full trailer for Paddington in Peru, the third installment in the Paddington film series from Sony. This film follows anthropomorphic bear Paddington (Ben Whishaw) and the Brown family to Peru in search of Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) after she goes missing. The returning cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Madeleine Harris. Joining the cast are Emily Mortimer, Antonio Banderas, and Olivia Colman. Paddington in Peru will be released on November 8th, 2024, in the UK and January 17th, 2025, in the United States. Check out the Paddington in Peru trailer here:
I like Emily Mortimer more than Sally Hawkins, actually, but I know Mrs. Brown being recast for Paddington in Peru is going to distract me during the movie. The Brown family is a big part of Paddington’s cinematic story, and I wish they didn’t have to recast anyone. I also don’t care for the pop song used in the trailer; I would prefer something original and less bubble-gummy. Paddington is far from high drama, but I don’t like it when movies or even their marketing rely on vapid pop music.
However, I don’t want it to sound like I didn’t enjoy the trailer for Paddington in Peru. I love the Paddington movies, especially Paddington 2. I love this character and the wholesome feel of the films, and I love the Brown family and Paddington’s integration into the family unit. Hugh Bonneville is an actor I’ve come to love over the past few years, and he’s probably my favorite Brown besides the little bear. I really hope Paddington in Peru doesn’t take the favored route of recent family movies, permanently moving Paddington back to Peru and away from his adopted family. I’m not sure we have to worry about that in this case, but it’s become my default concern with ongoing franchises for kids and families. Well, that and poorly written or nonexistent villains.
But that’s one thing I’m absolutely not worried about. The Paddington movies have always had great villains, both humorous and threatening. The humor is another major strength of the series and one reason adults enjoy these movies so much. Paddington 2 made me see Hugh Grant as more than eye candy for my mom’s generation, and Nicole Kidman is always awesome. I like Antonio Banderas and can’t recall a single bad role from him. A hunter is a pretty obvious villain for a movie starring a talking bear, but I’m open-minded about it.
It makes perfect sense to send Paddington back to Peru, as long as he doesn’t move there permanently at the end of the movie. This is a logical progression for his character because Peru and Aunt Lucy have always been important aspects of his story. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her character, as well as the nun Olivia Colman plays. They tend to get excellent, interesting actors to appear in these movies, and I don’t see that changing here. I feel like Paddington in Peru might be the last movie in this series. A trilogy is a good place to stop the series, and I don’t want them to wear this concept thin and overuse it. What is charming now can become annoying over time, especially if there isn’t a good story idea for another Paddington adventure. If they do end Paddington here, I hope they come up with a satisfying ending, and I think they will.
