TRAILER: The Wild Robot (2024)

Today, DreamWorks Animation SKG dropped the final trailer for The Wild Robot, the latest film written and directed by Chris Sanders. Sanders is known for being a writer on some of Disney’s biggest movies from the 90s, like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Mulan, and he has directed Lilo and Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and (unfortunately) The Croods. Based on Peter Brown’s book of the same name, The Wild Robot is about a robot that overcomes its programming when it encounters and grows attached to various creatures on Earth. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, and more. Check out the final trailer for The Wild Robot here:

For a while, I was getting Wall-E vibes from The Wild Robot, but each successive trailer makes this movie look more interesting. Now, having seen the latest trailer, I’m just pretty sure The Wild Robot is going to destroy me emotionally. Billing it as DreamWorks’ best movie is quite a bold move; I’m not sure if the studio can top the outstanding Prince of Egypt. However, The Wild Robot looks very good. The animation is gorgeous to behold, and this is exactly the type of story that gets to me. I love animals and movies about them, provided they’re not too silly. But The Wild Robot doesn’t look silly at all. I’m Impressed by everything from the cast to the stunning visuals, and I think The Wild Robot might be something really special. I think Chris Sanders is a great director, but he could also use a win after The Croods and The Call of the Wild, his live-action directorial debut starring Harrison Ford. Sanders was inspired by classic Disney animation and the works of anime legend Hayao Miyazaki when he conceived of this movie. The latter is news to me, but I’m not surprised; the robot resembles the ones in Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky. Sanders worked for Disney for years and likely still would if they hadn’t screwed him out of directing Bolt, so a fondness for their glory days doesn’t seem out of place.

DreamWorks is one of the more inconsistent big animation studios out there, not to give Disney and Pixar a pass on their less than stellar output of late. DreamWorks puts out some bizarre stinkers like Bee Movie and Kung Fu Panda 4, but every couple of years, they’ll shock me with a great movie like How to Train Your Dragon or the more recent Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It’s impossible to know what to expect from them, probably because they mix up their stable of artists and directors more often than a studio like Pixar. It’s actually inspiring how DreamWorks will give people a chance, even when it doesn’t pan out for them.

I really can’t get over how good The Wild Robot looks. I’m especially in awe of the textures of the animals’ fur and the water when the robot is climbing the waterfall. This movie has some of the zany hand-drawn energy of The Bad Guys and The Last Wish, but still definitely maintains its own art style and visual language. I feel like The Wild Robot came out of nowhere, but now, I can’t wait to see it when it hits theaters on September 27, 2024.

But what did you think of the trailer? Are you going to see The Wild Robot in two weeks?  Let us know in the comments!

It looks like it’s going to be a classic. Has a message and yeah, the feels are there. I’m getting a buzz from it. It seems special. I think it’s going to be a sleeper hit and, for people that see it, I think it will exceed expectations, getting emotion from the story.

The only thing about the trailer are the voices. I thought it was mostly quiet. The voices do not seem to match up.

The Last Wish did that for me in a way. It was way too good to be an animated piece. It actually made me think back on that movie a lot. There was a lot of quality to it. I am not only impressed, but struck by the feeling that The Last Wish became an all time great story because of the embedded messages.
