Universal Releases Jurassic World Rebirth Teaser, Images, and Plot Synopsis

The dinosaurs that refuse to go extinct are back, and they’re bringing a new cast of characters with them. Today, Universal released a teaser, some images, and plenty of information on the next installment of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World series (via Variety), which now has an official title: Jurassic World Rebirth. Directed by Gareth Edwards (so there probably won’t be any dinosaurs in it – way to keep costs down, Universal!) and written by David Koepp (who wrote Jurassic Park), Jurassic World Rebirth takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion and finds the dinosaurs unable to live in the modern world’s “inhospitable” ecology, forcing the ones who survive to inhabit land near the equator, as it’s the closest to their natural environment. As luck would have it, the three biggest dinosaurs have genetic material that can help create miracle drugs, so a Special Forces team led by Scarlett Johansson is sent in to extract some DNA (excuse me while I warm up my Mr. DNA voice… “DINO DNA!”). But when the commandos run into a shipwrecked family, they find themselves stranded on another dinosaur-infested island. There’s also a “sinister, shocking discovery” involved. Here’s the teaser, which is really just the logo:

In addition to Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali – who is probably relieved to have signed onto a movie that started filming a couple of months later – plays Johansson’s second-in-command and trusted friend, Jonathan Bailey is a paleontologist, and Rupert Friend is a pharmaceutical representative who is obviously the villain. Manuel García-Rulfo is the patriarch of the family of castaways. Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled to stomp into theaters on July 2, 2025. Here are the images:

Well, it certainly sounds like yet another Jurassic World movie. It’s my belief that there should never have been any sequels to Jurassic Park, so Jurassic World Rebirth has a lot going against it for me just by existing. It’s not that I’m mad it’s being made, especially at this point, when there are already five sequels; it’s just another goofy entry in an increasingly silly series that will never be nearly as good as the classic that started it all. However, being objective, there are some interesting ideas in that synopsis that Jurassic World Rebirth could explore to make itself better than it has to be. For example, I like the idea of the dinosaurs being unable to survive in the current climate. The movie will probably make this some ham-handed global warming lecture because that’s all Hollywood knows how to do with stories about the environment anymore (outside of Twisters, it seems). But it would be neat if it was a commentary on trying to reverse the natural order of things. This goes back to Jurassic Park, when Ian Malcolm tells Hammond that bringing back the dinosaurs is a mistake because “nature selected them for extinction.” Perhaps the perceived disaster of unleashing dinosaurs on the world ended up proving Malcolm right, and nature undid man’s meddling. The surviving dinosaurs then have a sort of desperation (in terms of survival instincts) to remain in their little pocket of the world and thrive as best they can. When Scarlett Johansson and her team enter their territory looking for a DNA sample, maybe the dinosaurs will see it as a threat to their existence and go for the jugular. You then have two species at war for their own longevity: the dinosaurs need to be left alone to survive, while the humans need the dinosaurs’ DNA to prolong their lives. That could be an interesting conflict with no real bad guys – except the pharmaceutical guy, who will undoubtedly be the devil despite trying to cure cancer and benefit mankind. (Scarlett Johansson is totally gonna kick him into a raptor pit or something.) We’ll see what happens, I suppose; these movies always make a ton of money, so the Jurassic franchise will exist longer than the dinosaurs did.

Agree with the article a lot. Mainly, it’s a pay day for the actors. Gives them something to do. I am OK with that. Good point that the original should have been a stand alone because it was such a classic. At the same time, it seems Hollywood will remake every 20 years at least, or they have the timing down to reach every generation.

I once heard that the music industry had the core genre change down to a science, like, every 4 year span, I think. The 4 years was the core kids who went to high school then, so just by the clump of artists or albums, they will know when you were a teenager.

Part about the lecture was funny. Gives a chance for Malcolm to ham it up and be pretentious.

I’m sure that’s true about the music industry. I think as a rule they’re much more in tune with what their customers want. They seem to care more than the movie industry does. Look at downloading music, for example. They absolutely hated Napster, Limewire, and all that stuff, but they recognized how popular it was and figured out how to make it work for them. Now, downloading music is the norm, they just monetized it. It’s not even like you have to go looking for it; you can download songs from Amazon for a price. Compare that to the movie studios that are still struggling with how to make money from streaming. People that savvy know how to appeal to people.

And I’ll tell you, nothing makes you feel more ancient than hearing stuff from your high school years on the oldies station.

I think Hollywood has lost interest in taking chances. It’s a weird kind of chicken-or-the-egg thing, where they’re hurting for money because they make soulless sequels and remakes, but because they’re hurting for money, they don’t want to risk an original movie, so they make more soulless sequels and remakes because they’re considered safe bets. And when someone comes along and tries to do his own thing, they do whatever they can to ruin him and his film because they don’t want the general wisdom proven wrong. It’s also partly the insane cost of movies now, which, again, is their own fault, because they got drunk on blockbusters and now have to make the kind of money only an Avengers or Jurassic movie can generate, especially because the home video market has dropped so much; unfortunately, if those movies miss, they lose a ton more than they would have with a smaller movie.

Off topic, but have you ever seen those videos of Python Cowboy? He’s a hunter of invasive species of iguana in Florida and some of them are as big as a dog. They look like Dinosaurs.
