A job listing on WB Games has recently sparked major speculation amongst fans regarding the Harry Potter franchise. The listing, now removed from the site, is still being circulated via a screenshot from GameRant. Under Warner Bros. Discovery’s career page, a Senior Producer role at Avalanche Software stated, “Join the team behind the blockbuster open world, action RPG Hogwarts Legacy as we create what’s next!” And under the “Nice to Haves” section, a bullet point noted, “Experience developing Open World RPG games or action/magical combat games a plus.”
It appears safe to suggest that there could very well be a sequel to the Wizarding World game, which did exceedingly well despite the outcries from activists to boycott it for having any association with J.K. Rowling, who has been vocally against the transgender movement, particularly over keeping women’s spaces their own. The game sold 256% above targets in its first two weeks, then went on to sell 22 million copies in 2023, and became the best-selling game of 2023 with a nomination for Game of the Year. In February of last year, Warner Bros. Games President David Haddad told Variety, “We are very pleased with the initial launch and see a bright future for our other platform launches.”
There were also rumors in March of 2023 that a TV show based on the game was in the works at HBO Max.
To further any evidence of a potential sequel, in March of this year, during a conference call with Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games, J.B. Perrette discussed the future of live-service games in the same breath as Hogwarts Legacy.
And even though he confessed that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a “disappointment,” Perrette championed Warner Bros.’s four major gaming IP expanding into mobile, multi-platform free-to-play, and live service, which includes DC Comics, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter.
He also stated during the conference, “Rather than just launching a one-and-done console game, how do develop a game around, for example, Hogwarts Legacy, that is a live service where people can live and build and play in that world on an ongoing basis?”
This sparked a frenzy amongst fans, who created a petition begging Warner Bros. not to make the then-speculated Hogwarts Legacy 2 a live-service game. The petition currently has over 7,500 signatures out of a 10,000 goal.
Now, with the success of the first game, it would be simple to predict a similar outcome for a sequel, yet there are still many concerns. Many AAA gaming studios do not hold back on their DEI initiatives, and Hogwarts Legacy was no exception, with the trans bartender and lesbian witch couple. Also, the other small details, such as having far more diverse students and staff in a school located in Scotland in the 1890s, remove one from the time period in which the story is set; having the professors and other NPC students refer to your character as “they” is also rather off-putting in this day and age. It’s very doubtful that, despite the game being successful, the developers will shy away from the “wokeness” rather than continue to double down.
There was also some disdain because there was no Quidditch in the game, even though it Professor Black said from the start that Quidditch was canceled for the year. With the launch of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions due out September 3rd of this year, at the very least, there will be a game focused solely on the popular Wizarding sport, even though it was not present in Hogwarts Legacy.
