Yaira #1 Campaign Passes $1 Million in 24 Hours

The Rippaverse’s newest star has joined the million-dollar club faster than her predecessors. Around 11:00 AM Eastern this morning, twenty-four hours after it launched, the Yaira #1 campaign officially passed $1 million in pre-sales. This is a new Rippaverse record, surpassing the first campaign, Isom #1, which reached $1 million after thirty hours. It’s also significant that Yaira is not written by Eric July, owner and founder of the Rippaverse; it’s written by Jen and Sylvia Soska, who previously wrote “Black Widow: No Restraints Play” for Marvel (with art by Débora Caritá). This is important because it proves that the Rippaverse is powered by more than just July’s popularity and fanbase; that was the spark that ignited the brand, but it’s growing beyond him to include other creators. The previous campaign, Alphacore #1, was written by a comic book veteran, Bane co-creator Chuck Dixon, and while it didn’t reach the sales heights of either Isom campaign – or what Yaira #1 will likely garner – it brought in $1,300,694, 434% of its sales goal. The Rippaverse is becoming a comic label people trust, at least enough to give new books from other creatives (albeit known quantities so far) a shot.

Still, it feels like there’s something special about Yaira. There was enthusiasm for her since the beginning of the Rippaverse, with cosplayers (including Geeks + Gamers’ own Krista Novva, whom you can see in the Yaira #1 campaign announcement video) dressing up as her at conventions. I’m sure Eric July planned to have a Yaira book from the beginning, as he intended to create a universe that sprung from Isom, but her popularity felt organic, like she clicked with readers. That’s likely a big part of why the campaign is seeing these huge numbers; the customers wanted something, and the Rippaverse is giving it to them. This isn’t a revolutionary tactic; it just feels like it at the moment because most mainstream entertainment brands have adopted a policy of telling the customers what they should want and calling them names when they don’t buy it. But that’s the thing about vacuums; someone always steps in to fill them. The Yaira #1 campaign has over two months before it ends, with May 25 being the last day you can pre-order the book; that’s a lot of time to bump up its already high numbers (which I suspect it will because twenty-four hours and a million bucks later, there’s still a wait to get onto the campaign page), and if people like this one, each new Yaira release could feel like an event. It’s gratifying seeing all this spring from the imagination of a guy who, at his core, is just one of us, a fan who wants to do it his way.

You can pre-order Yaira #1 on the campaign page at Rippaverse.com, and buy the other books and Rippaverse merch while you’re there.
