Keanu Reeves Will Play Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Multiple outlets are reporting that Keanu Reeves has signed on for the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie as Shadow the Hedgehog. John Campea first broke this news on his podcast, The John Campea Show; entertainment news sites Variety and The Hollywood Reporter later confirmed it through their sources. Reeves will play against Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessy as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Jim Carrey as villain Dr. Robotnik, all of whom reprise their roles from the previous two entries in the Paramount movie series. Shadow was teased in a mid-credits scene from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so his appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 isn’t a huge surprise. Jeff Fowler returns to direct the film, which is set to open on December 20th, 2024. Paramount declined to comment on Reeves’ casting.

Shadow the Hedgehog is an antihero from the Sonic the Hedgehog video games who first appeared in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2; he was created by Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather. He is a playable character in Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic the Hedgehog (a reboot of the series from 2006), among others. He also got his own spin-off game, Shadow the Hedgehog, in 2005; this game was heavily criticized by critics for being more adult than the other Sonic games and for the use of guns and violence, although it was a big seller. He is essentially a darker version of Sonic, as evinced by his black color scheme, in contrast to Sonic’s blue.

I haven’t played the Sonic the Hedgehog games or seen the movies, but what do you think about casting Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog in the upcoming third one? Let us know in the comments!
