Pruitt Taylor Vince Will Play Pa Kent in Superman

Superman will make his triumphant (we hope) return with his dad in his corner. The Wrap exclusively reports that Pruitt Taylor Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s adopted father, in Superman, James Gunn’s upcoming superhero film. The first in Warner Bros.’ new DCU, Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and his bespectacled alter ego, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Nathan Fillion, Wendell Pierce, Skyler Gizondo, María Gabriela de Faría, and Sara Sampaio will also appear in the film. Pruitt Taylor Vince has been in a lot of movies and TV shows over the years, including JFK, Quantum Leap, Alias, The X-Files, Deadwood, Stranger Things, and plenty more. Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

This is the kind of casting I like. Pruitt Taylor Vince is a good actor who always gives a solid performance, but he’s someone you never think of when casting a role in your head, and I certainly wouldn’t have thought of him for Pa Kent. But now that he’s in, I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with the part. I’m also glad the Kents will be in this movie; they’re essential to establishing who Superman is and, more importantly, why he is who he is. I wonder if Jonathan will only be dead and present in flashbacks or dreams, or if he’ll be alive. Both dynamics can work; Glenn Ford played Pa Kent in the Richard Donner Superman, and while he had a small part, his presence is felt throughout the film because of Ford’s excellent performance in only two scenes. You saw the wisdom and values Clark’s father imparted to him every time Superman helped someone. Conversely, on Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the Kents were both alive when Clark moved to Metropolis and became Superman, and they acted as his confidants, the only people who knew his secret. They were there to give him advice when he needed it and support when he was alone. It would be neat to see that again, and if it happens, I hope they get a great Martha Kent for Pruitt Taylor Vince to act with.
